U.S. Census Bureau data shows the country’s older adult population keeps climbing while numbers in younger groups decline. From 2020 to 2024, those ages 65 and above grew by 13%. Meanwhile, the total for those under 18 dropped by 1.7%. Over the past century, the country’s older population has surged, rising from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million by 2024.
A 2021 analysis estimates that nearly half of those in this age group—about 28 million people—are expected to need long-term services and support. The analysis also indicates that more than one-third could eventually require care in a nursing home.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance-focused education organization. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
