Idaho Congressman Mike Simpson has announced the inclusion of $12,000,000 in funding for the Idaho Falls Regional Airport Terminal Expansion Project. This funding is part of the Fiscal Year 2025 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, secured through Community Project Funding (CPF) at Rep. Simpson's request.

“As Idaho Falls continues to grow, it is essential that the airport grows with it,” said Rep. Simpson. “Expanding the Idaho Falls Regional Airport will better serve the Idaho Falls community, support local jobs, and enhance the city's status as a top destination for travelers and economic opportunities. I have been a steadfast supporter of our local airports, and I am pleased that this funding will facilitate these necessary improvements.”

Idaho Falls Mayor Rebecca Casper emphasized the importance of this funding: “The Idaho Falls Regional Airport is foundational to Eastern Idaho’s growing economy. This $12 million in Community Project Funding is critical as the airport strives to meet the increasing demand for air service. We are most grateful for Representative Simpson’s support. This funding helps ensure that IDA will remain the regional airport of choice for Eastern Idaho.”

The allocated funds will be used for Phase 1 of IDA’s terminal expansion. This phase focuses on baggage expansion, providing necessary space for outbound baggage operations and future operations. It aims to improve safety by creating adequate space to load baggage carts and enhance operational efficiency with a new conveyor system. Additionally, it includes more ticket queueing and counter space to accommodate increased air service and provides second-level space for future passenger hold areas. The phase also plans alterations to existing spaces to allow for future expansion of the security screening checkpoint.

Despite some claims that CPF projects are "wasteful earmarks," proponents argue that they allow Members of Congress like Rep. Simpson to allocate federal dollars back into their communities based on local priorities. These projects address clear needs within communities across Idaho and have broad community support.

As Idaho’s only appropriator, Rep. Simpson plays a crucial role in advocating for state priorities and ensuring that tax dollars return to benefit Idahoans.

The Idaho Falls Regional Airport Terminal Expansion Project is included in the Fiscal Year 2025 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, which has been approved by the House Appropriations Committee.
