U.S. Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) expressed his views during an executive session regarding the nomination of David Johnson as Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA). Crapo highlighted Johnson's qualifications and experience, particularly noting his previous service at the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Crapo stated, "Mr. Johnson has strong qualifications and oversight experience, and I appreciate his service at the Department of Veterans Affairs and his willingness to serve today." He acknowledged Johnson's commitment to addressing waste, fraud, and abuse while ensuring taxpayer information confidentiality.

Despite recognizing shared priorities with Johnson on taxpayer information protection, Crapo voiced concerns about proceeding with the nomination before the new Congress is sworn in. "However, given that the new Congress will be sworn in only less than a month from today... it is my opinion that these newly-elected officials deserve the opportunity to evaluate this appointment," he said.

Crapo concluded by expressing a willingness to collaborate with Johnson if confirmed. He emphasized the importance of TIGTA's role in overseeing the IRS and maintaining tax system integrity: "I look forward to working with Mr. Johnson if he is confirmed... ensuring that TIGTA continues to provide essential oversight of the IRS and our nation’s tax system."
