Idaho Congressman Mike Simpson has joined a letter urging President Biden and his administration to withdraw the Environmental Protection Agency’s proposed rule on electric vehicles. The letter, led by Congressman Randy Feenstra and Senator Mike Crapo, has garnered the support of nearly 140 Representatives and Senators.
In his statement, Rep. Simpson expressed concerns about the potential negative impacts of the proposed rule, stating, “The Biden administration’s radical electric vehicle policies are driving up consumer costs, hurting American jobs, and emboldening China.” He emphasized the need to push back against what he sees as heavy-handed government intervention that could leave the American people bearing the financial burden.
Rep. Feenstra echoed these sentiments, highlighting the implications of mandating electric vehicles on American families and the economy. He emphasized the importance of allowing individuals to choose the best vehicles for their needs at affordable prices, rather than being forced into electric vehicles that may not be practical or reliable for all situations.
Senator Crapo also voiced his concerns, stating that rules driven by the Biden administration's green agenda could limit consumer choice and affordability in the vehicle market. He emphasized the importance of American-made energy products over reliance on materials primarily sourced from China.
Rep. Simpson's opposition to the proposed rule stems from his role as Chairman of the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Subcommittee, where he has actively worked to block such policies. His efforts were reflected in the Fiscal Year 2024 Interior and Environment Appropriations Bill, which successfully passed the House of Representatives in November.
The letter signed by Rep. Simpson and other lawmakers urges President Biden to reconsider the transition to electric vehicles and work towards solutions that prioritize affordability and choice for American consumers.
