WASHINGTON— Today, Idaho Congressman Mike Simpson has successfully secured $12.2 million in funding for crucial water improvement projects in Island Park, Preston, Rexburg, and Pocatello, Idaho. This funding was included in the Fiscal Year 2024 Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Appropriations Bill at Congressman Simpson's request through Community Project Funding.
Rep. Simpson emphasized the significance of the State and Tribal Assistance Grants (STAG) funding, stating, “STAG funding is a great way to help our local communities improve their water systems and treatment capabilities.” He further added, “As Idaho's only appropriator, it is my honor and responsibility to advocate for Idaho and ensure our state's priorities are heard. I am proud to partner with the cities of Island Park, Preston, Rexburg, and Pocatello, and produce meaningful results for our communities.”
The funding breakdown for the projects includes $1.75 million for Island Park, $3.75 million for Preston, $5,000,543 for Rexburg, and $1.75 million for Pocatello. Each city will utilize the allocated funds to address specific water infrastructure needs, ranging from constructing new water systems to upgrading wastewater treatment facilities.
Island Park Mayor Bruce Ard expressed gratitude for the support received, noting, “The City of Island Park and the community known as Island Park has many challenges with the current water systems. We are very happy to work with Congressmen Mike Simpson and his staff on trying to correct this problem for the Macks Inn area.”
Similarly, Preston Mayor Dan Keller and various officials from Preston City expressed their appreciation for the funding, highlighting the importance of the projects in addressing water supply inadequacies and ensuring future water needs are met.
Rexburg Mayor Jerry Merrill commended Congressman Simpson for his efforts in securing funding for the Rexburg area Wastewater Treatment System upgrade, stating, “With our city’s rapid growth, it has been a struggle trying to find enough cash in our annual budget to accomplish this vital project.”
Lastly, Pocatello Mayor Brian Blad emphasized the critical need for modernizing wastewater systems in the Johnny Creek neighborhood, thanking Congressman Simpson for securing the funding that will kickstart this essential effort.
