WASHINGTON— Idaho Congressman Mike Simpson has taken a stand to protect the classification of potatoes as a vegetable in the upcoming Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Alongside Rep. Pingree and 27 other Members of Congress, Rep. Simpson opposes any reclassification of potatoes as a non-vegetable item.

"Any effort to reclassify the potato would be misguided,” stated Rep. Simpson, emphasizing the nutritional value of potatoes and their significance as a household staple in America.

In a letter addressed to the Secretaries of Agriculture and Health & Human Services, the Members highlighted the essential nutrients found in potatoes and the historical classification of potatoes as a vegetable by the USDA. They expressed strong opposition to any attempts to reclassify potatoes as a grain, citing the potential confusion for consumers and the negative impact on nutrition programs and schools.

The Members also referenced a 2013 National Library of Medicine Study, which underscored the importance of including potatoes in the vegetable group due to their contribution of critical nutrients. They urged the authorities to consider the scientific evidence and maintain the current classification of potatoes as a vegetable.

In conclusion, the Members urged against reclassifying potatoes as a grain, stating that such a move would not only impact consumer understanding but also raise questions about the scientific credibility of the Dietary Guidelines process.

The full letter can be accessed for further details and insights into the Members' concerns.
