U.S. Senate Finance Committee Chairman Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) delivered remarks during a hearing to consider Scott Bessent's nomination as Secretary of the Treasury. The session welcomed new Finance Committee Members: Senators Marshall, Luján, Sanders, Smith, Warnock, and Welch.

Chairman Crapo expressed honor in leading the committee with Ranking Member Wyden and emphasized their history of collaboration to benefit constituents in the Pacific Northwest and across America. He highlighted the committee's jurisdiction over tax, trade, and health care policy as challenging issues Congress faces.

Crapo extended a warm welcome to Scott Bessent, President Trump's nominee for Treasury Secretary. "Congratulations, Mr. Bessent, on your well-deserved nomination," he said, appreciating Bessent's cooperation with the committee.

Bessent was commended for his transparency and professionalism throughout the vetting process. Crapo noted that Bessent provided substantial documentation supporting his positions with backing from major law and accounting firms.

The chairman acknowledged Bessent's extensive experience in global finance and academia, noting his entrepreneurial success in asset management and roles at Yale University and various organizations. "President Trump made an excellent choice in nominating you," Crapo stated.

Crapo outlined the responsibilities of a Treasury Secretary including managing economic growth support and representing U.S. interests globally. He stressed the importance of working collaboratively with Congress on pro-growth tax policies and improving global competitiveness through fair trade deals.

Reflecting on voter sentiment favoring economic conditions from Trump's first term, Crapo looked forward to working closely with Bessent if confirmed.

"Mr. Bessent... I intend to support [your nomination]," concluded Crapo before yielding to Ranking Member Wyden for his opening remarks.
