U.S. Senate Finance Committee Chairman Mike Crapo, a Republican from Idaho, addressed the Senate floor to advocate for Scott Bessent's nomination as Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Treasury. The Senate is set to vote on cloture regarding Bessent's nomination.
Crapo emphasized the critical role of a Treasury Secretary, which includes fostering economic growth, representing U.S. interests globally, managing the federal treasury, and overseeing financial institutions. He noted that past successful Treasury Secretaries have had a strong understanding of business, financial markets, foreign policy, national security, budgets, and regulation.
"Mr. Bessent’s impressive background positions him for similar success," Crapo stated. "He has worked for the last three decades as one of the sharpest minds in the global financial industry."
Crapo highlighted Bessent's qualifications and character as ideal for the role. He mentioned Bessent's commitment to public service and his aim to restore prosperity akin to what was experienced during President Trump's first term.
"It includes restoring prosperity and opportunity that our nation experienced during President Trump's first term in office," Crapo remarked.
Crapo referenced Senator Graham's sentiment at Bessent's nomination hearing: "If qualifications – and I might add, character – are one’s test, voting to confirm Mr. Bessent is one of the easiest we could ever take."
Crapo also recalled supporting well-qualified Treasury Secretary candidates nominated by Democrat presidents in previous congresses despite differing views on some issues. He urged bipartisan support for Bessent's candidacy.
"He is the right person for this job," Crapo concluded while commending President Trump for nominating an excellent candidate.
