Idaho Congressman Mike Simpson has announced his support for H.R. 273, known as the REMAIN in Mexico Act. This bill seeks to establish a permanent version of an immigration policy initiated during President Trump's administration. The legislation is spearheaded by Congressman Brandon Gill from Texas and has garnered bipartisan backing from over 100 congressional members.

Rep. Simpson expressed his reasons for supporting the bill, stating, “Under President Trump's first administration, the American people understood the meaning of a secure border, largely due to President Trump's successful Remain in Mexico border policy. The Biden administration's reckless decision to repeal this policy fueled a surge of illegal immigration pouring into our communities over the last four years. Congress must codify this proven Trump policy into federal law to keep Americans safe. I am proud to cosponsor this commonsense bill to help secure our southern border and strengthen our national security.”

The "Remain in Mexico" policy, officially referred to as migrant protection protocols, was first introduced by the Trump administration in January 2019. It allows U.S. authorities to send foreign nationals who entered through the southern border back to Mexico while they await their immigration hearings.
