Camp Hope Ready To Welcome Campers, Volunteers

Camphope

Aberdeen United Methodist Church issued the following announcement on April 26.

What’s the name of the camp that’s made for you and me?  C-A-M-P  H-O-P-E!

One of the best kept secrets in the Oregon-Idaho Camp and Retreat Ministries is Camp Hope.

Camp Hope, offered every summer at Camp Magruder, is a ministry space for adults with intellectual disabilities to experience God’s love in a camp setting. Campers are given the chance to participate in crafts, music, games, boating, beach time, worship and fellowship. For this group of campers, they may not have been able to participate in the camping experience before – for a variety of reasons.

“The camp is staffed by a loving group of volunteers who often return yearly in order to serve these very special friends,” writes camp director Sue Green. “Many of our campers attend every year, and they eagerly await the start of this camp; it has been sorely missed during the pandemic. Some come from group homes, and the only exposure they have to God’s love is through Camp Hope. It is a crucial ministry within the greater camping ministry in our area. For these campers, understanding God can be quite simple: God loves me. God loves you.”

Registration is open now for this year’s camp is being held July 6-8. The cost to attend is $350 and scholarships are available for campers who need financial assistance. Campers do not need to be connected to a United Methodist Church to attend.

As excited as the campers are about the experience, Green said it is also critical to have enough staff volunteers to make this a memorable experience. If anyone is interested in volunteering their time on staff for these three days, contact Green at suelundygreen@gmail.com.

The following scripture provide guidance to the camp’s ethos:

Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.   –1 Peter 4: 10

If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be  praised through Jesus Christ.  To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.  –1 Peter 4: 11b
