U.S. Senators Mike Crapo, Jim Risch, and Tom Cotton, along with other colleagues, have introduced the No Bailouts for Campus Criminals Act, aimed at preventing student loan forgiveness for protestors convicted of crimes on college campuses. The bill is a response to the rise of antisemitic protests on campuses across the United States.
“This legislation sends a strong message that criminal activity will not be tolerated on America’s college campuses, especially when it promotes antisemitism,” said Senator Crapo.
Senator Risch expressed his concerns about the student loan forgiveness scheme, stating, “The president’s entire student loan scheme is a political handout, and the idea that the handout will go to extremists sympathizing with terrorists is even more egregious. These handouts cannot happen.”
Senator Cotton added, “Americans who never went to college or responsibly paid off their debts shouldn’t have to pay off other people’s student loans. They especially shouldn’t have to pay off the loans of Hamas sympathizers shutting down and defacing campuses.”
Representative Brandon Williams is leading companion legislation in the House, emphasizing that no student protestor convicted of criminal offenses should be bailed out by student loan forgiveness.
The bill is supported by a group of Senators including Marsha Blackburn, Ted Cruz, Mitt Romney, and Marco Rubio, among others. The aim of the legislation is to ensure that taxpayer money does not fund criminals involved in violent campus protests.
