U.S. Senator Mike Crapo, representing Idaho, has collaborated with Senators Jim Risch and Mark Warner to introduce a resolution designating December 2, 2024, as World Nuclear Energy Day. The initiative is supported by the Senate Advanced Nuclear Caucus.

Senator Crapo emphasized the importance of nuclear energy innovation for both Americans and global citizens. "Continued investment in nuclear energy innovation works for not only the betterment of the American people, but all humanity," he stated. He also expressed gratitude towards those involved in ensuring safe and responsible nuclear energy use.

Senator Risch highlighted the growing enthusiasm for nuclear energy and its significance in maintaining U.S. leadership in this field. "Enthusiasm for nuclear energy is at an all-time high, and we must keep this momentum going," said Risch. He acknowledged advancements made by the United States and specifically mentioned contributions from the Idaho National Lab.

Senator Warner underscored nuclear energy's role in fulfilling both national and international energy needs. "Nuclear energy is critical to meeting U.S. and global energy demands," he noted while celebrating World Nuclear Energy Day alongside Senator Risch.

The resolution also has backing from several other senators including Dick Durbin, Mike Braun, Chris Coons, Thom Tillis, Sheldon Whitehouse, Joe Manchin, Roger Marshall, Cory Booker, and Cynthia Lummis.

December 2 holds historical significance for nuclear energy due to two key events: In 1942, it marked the demonstration of the world's first self-sustaining controlled nuclear chain reaction; in 1957, it saw the start of operations at the first commercial nuclear power plant in the United States.
