U.S. Senate Finance Committee Chairman Mike Crapo, a Republican from Idaho, addressed the Senate to advocate for Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s nomination as Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Crapo urged his colleagues to support Kennedy's nomination ahead of a cloture vote.
Crapo highlighted Kennedy's extensive experience and commitment to consumer advocacy, which he believes will establish a patient-centered approach at HHS. "As Secretary of HHS, Mr. Kennedy would oversee our nation’s expansive health care system," Crapo stated.
Kennedy's focus on tackling America's chronic disease epidemic was emphasized by Crapo as a key reason for supporting his nomination. According to Crapo, this focus "will save lives, reduce costs and establish a foundation for a healthier, stronger country."
Transparency is another quality Crapo praised in Kennedy, quoting him from his hearing: "…if Congress asked me for information, you will get it immediately." This transparency is expected to empower patients and foster better communication with Congress.
Throughout the vetting process, Kennedy engaged with numerous members from both political parties and participated in two committee hearings. He answered over nine hundred questions and provided thousands of pages of documents.
Kennedy underwent the standard Office of Government Ethics process required for nominees before the Finance Committee. A letter from the director of the Office confirmed that he complied with laws governing conflicts of interest.
In response to requests from Finance Committee Members, Kennedy amended his ethics agreement beyond what is typically required by the Office of Government Ethics.
Crapo concluded by urging his colleagues to advance Kennedy's nomination: "I urge my colleagues to join me in advancing his nomination so we can begin to make our country healthier."
