U.S. Senator Mike Crapo of Idaho has announced his support for the reintroduction of the Future Logging Careers Act, a piece of legislation aimed at bolstering America's family-run timber industry. This initiative is being spearheaded by Senators Jim Risch and Angus King, alongside Representatives Glenn "GT" Thompson and Jared Golden.
"Family businesses are the way of life in many agricultural communities and logging is no exception," stated Crapo. He emphasized that the act would provide young people with opportunities to engage in family-led training, thereby strengthening the logging industry and supplying essential natural resources to the market. "The Future Logging Careers Act would offer today’s young adults a chance to be tomorrow’s industry leaders while also restoring health and resiliency to our forests."
The proposed legislation seeks to amend the Fair Labor Standards Act, permitting 16- and 17-year-olds from logging families to work in certain mechanized operations under parental supervision. Similar exemptions are already in place for farming families.
Additional co-sponsors include Senators Tim Sheehy, Susan Collins, and John Cornyn.
