U.S. Senator Mike Crapo, alongside Senator Jim Risch, has introduced the Simplifying Subcontracting Act aimed at reducing the complexity of federal government contracting. The bill seeks to facilitate access for small businesses and entrepreneurs to pursue contracts.
Senator Crapo stated, "Qualified small businesses and entrepreneurs deserve the same access to federal government contracts as larger entities that currently dominate the contracting market." He emphasized that simplifying language would improve their access to the application process.
Senator Risch added, "Small businesses are vital to our economy but are often left out in federal government contracting due to overly complicated, bureaucratic language." The act mandates certain federal contracts use plain language, allowing more small businesses to compete.
The Simplifying Subcontracting Act is a concise one-page bill requiring straightforward language in subcontracting work given to small businesses. It reflects principles from the Plain Writing Act of 2010.
Co-sponsors of this legislation include Senators John Kennedy, Todd Young, and John Hickenlooper. The bill has received support from Idaho Small Business Development Centers, Idaho Veteran Entrepreneurship Alliance, and American Subcontractors Association.
