Washington, D.C. – In honor of National Police week, Idaho Congressman Mike Simpson on May 19, 2023 highlighted his support of recent legislation for law enforcement officers.

“Law enforcement officers put their lives on the line every day to keep our communities safe.  I thank them for their important, irreplaceable work, and want them to know they have my full support in Congress,” said Simpson.

This week, Simpson supported the following legislation, which passed the House of Representatives:

  • H.R. 2494 – POLICE Act, to make the assault of a law enforcement officer by an illegal immigrant a deportable offense.
  • H.R. 3091 – Federal Law Enforcement Officer Service Weapon Purchase Act, to establish a program for federal law enforcement officers to purchase retired handguns at salvage value, so long as the officer is in good standing with the agency.
  • H. Con. Res. 40, expressing support for local law enforcement officers and condemning efforts to defund or dismantle local law enforcement agencies.
Simpson also recently cosponsored H.R. 743, the Protect and Serve Act, which would create federal penalties for individuals who deliberately and criminally target law enforcement officers.

“As reports of crime and unrest increase, our men and women in police uniforms need top notch support, equipment, and training.  This and every week, we recognize the sacrifices of police officers, especially our Idaho police officers, who serve and protect our communities and nation.”
