U.S. Senator Mike Crapo of Idaho has expressed strong disapproval following the Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) decision regarding the Lava Ridge Wind Project. The BLM recently released a Record of Decision for the final Environmental Impact Statement concerning this project.
Senator Crapo criticized the current administration, stating, "This Administration continues to disregard the valid concerns of Idahoans, farmers, ranchers, sportsmen and Minidoka survivors and descendants regarding the Lava Ridge project." He further commented on the timing of the decision: "It is par for the course for the Biden Administration to issue a late Friday decision dump after Americans decisively rejected the course of this administration in the recent election."
Crapo also mentioned his intention to work with future administrations on this matter. "I look forward to engaging with the incoming Trump Administration to have this project reviewed thoughtfully and thoroughly for a just and appropriate product that reflects the overwhelming will of Idaho’s citizenry," he stated.
The proposed Lava Ridge Wind Energy Project plans to construct numerous wind turbines across nearly 100,000 acres in Southern Idaho. This initiative has sparked significant opposition due to its potential impact on historical sites such as the Minidoka National Historic Site. This site holds historical significance as it was where over 13,000 Japanese Americans were incarcerated during World War II.
Idaho's Congressional Delegation has taken steps against this project by introducing legislation aimed at blocking its development. The project has faced formal opposition from various groups including Idaho's State Legislature, Constitutional Officers, local officials, and members of the Japanese American community.
