Washington, D.C.--U.S. Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) addressed the President’s Fiscal Year 2025 Budget Request for the Social Security Administration (SSA) at a hearing with Commissioner Martin O’Malley.
Crapo opened his remarks by thanking Senator Wyden and Commissioner O’Malley for their presence, emphasizing the importance of discussing the SSA's budget. He acknowledged Commissioner O’Malley's commitment to improving customer service within the SSA during his nomination hearing.
Throughout the hearing, Crapo expressed his interest in learning about the strategies Commissioner O’Malley intends to implement to tackle the challenges faced by the SSA, including wait times for the National 800 Number, processing times for disability decisions, and improper payments. He also sought insights into the metrics used to measure progress and how the Biden Administration's budget supports these initiatives.
Highlighting specific concerns, Crapo noted that despite a slight decrease, the average wait times for the National 800 Number still exceeded 30 minutes. He emphasized the need for the SSA to enhance its information technology projects to ensure responsible use of taxpayer funds.
Regarding disability decisions, Crapo pointed out the lengthy waiting periods faced by Americans and the proposed rule aimed at improving the adjudication process. He urged a balanced approach, stating, "simplification should not always result in more mandatory spending."
In addressing improper payments, Crapo commended recent steps taken by the SSA to enhance payment accuracy and reduce the burden on beneficiaries but stressed the importance of addressing initial errors proactively.
While acknowledging the operational requests in the President's Budget, Crapo criticized its failure to address Social Security's long-term solvency. He highlighted the absence of legislative proposals to support the President's commitment to safeguarding and strengthening Social Security, emphasizing the urgent need to ensure the program's sustainability for current and future beneficiaries.
In conclusion, Crapo thanked Commissioner O’Malley and the Committee for their participation in the hearing.
