U.S. Senators Mike Crapo, Jim Risch, and Lindsey Graham, along with 40 Republican Senators, have urged Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to proceed with a trial to consider the impeachment of U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. In a joint statement, the Senators emphasized the urgency of the situation at the southern border, stating, “Our brave men and women at Customs and Border Protection have worked tirelessly to make our nation safer, yet with 7.5 million encounters since President Biden took office, our southern border is a national security disaster.”
The Senators highlighted the significant increase in encounters at the border under Secretary Mayorkas, with a staggering 440% rise in fiscal year 2023 compared to fiscal year 2020. They underscored the severity of the border crisis, describing it as a "nightmare for the American people."
According to the Senators, the House of Representatives has already impeached Secretary Mayorkas based on the evidence presented. They asserted that the Senate now has a constitutional duty to hold a trial, emphasizing the importance of upholding the impeachment process as outlined by the framers of the Constitution. The Senators pointed out that throughout the history of congressional impeachments, the Senate has never shied away from its responsibility, regardless of the perceived strength of the case for impeachment.
The call for action was supported by a substantial number of Republican Senators, including John Barrasso, Marsha Blackburn, Ted Cruz, and Marco Rubio, among others. The Senators collectively signed a letter urging Schumer to fulfill his constitutional obligation and proceed with the impeachment trial of Secretary Mayorkas.
The full text of the letter can be found on the official Senate website, underscoring the unified stance of the Republican Senators in demanding accountability and adherence to the impeachment process in the case of Secretary Mayorkas.
